Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help you manage emotional difficulties, life stressors, impact of trauma, sense of self, mental health concerns, and overall promote mental well-being with improved skills and resources. While it is helpful to talk to friends and family for support, a professional therapist has training in various evidence-based approaches, clinical tools and resources, and emotional distance to provide you support without judgment or personal involvement. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies, such as brainspotting therapy.
I recognize that everyone has their own cultural and individual journey when it comes to healing and wellness and so I am here to learn from you as well on the best way to support you.
Focuses on understanding how traumatic experiences can affect your mental, emotional and physical well-being. This type of therapy aims to help you heal from the effects of trauma. Please know that trauma therapy requires a level of internal stabilization through healthy coping skills and emotional regulation as exploring such memories can be distressing. I will not pursue this unless you're ready and equipped with distress tolerance skills, self-soothing capabilities, and a safe support system.
Trauma can have lasting impact on the body and activate our fight-flight-freeze-fawn responses. This theory helps you understand how trauma impacts the body and mind through the autonomic nervous system and how to self-regulate and co-regulate in manners that takes into consideration your nervous system response.
We create stories through our life and carry them with us by giving meaning to those experiences. This impacts everything from self-esteem, world views, relationship, work and values. The focus is to use a variety of techniques and exercises to help heal and move past a problematic story.
Takes into the consideration the complexity of the individual mind and personality. It's based on the idea that the Self is made of multiple Parts and each Part once had a role and function, even though it might currently present as a barrier. For instance, a default Part (manifesting as a behaviour) might have helped keep us safe in the past, but keeps us stuck in the present.
The Acceptance part focuses on being mindful to stay focused on the present moment and accept thoughts and feelings without judgment. The Committment part works on finding meaning by identifying and working towards valued behaviour.
Focuses on core mindfulness, distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills, and improve relationships through interpersonal effectiveness.
Brainspotting (BSP) is a relatively new type of therapy that aims to help process difficult emotions or traumatic experiences in the body through eye positions. The clinician's job is to help identify “brainspots” (the eye positions) linked to certain experiences, emotions, or sources of distress and provide a space to process those experience. Brainspotting is very experiential and not limited to psychotherapists in Canada. As such make sure to try brainspotting with a trained clinician that is also qualified to help process any trauma or emotional concerns that may rise.
